On the shores of Lac des Sables, Ste-Agathe-des-Monts is the largest town in the Laurentians. A favorite with vacationing Montréalers and Americans since the early 1900s, the town and its surroundings have something for everyone. In the winter, there is cross-country skiing on its doorstep and with some 15 ski hills within very easy reach, including Mont-Tremblant, superb skiing and snowboarding. From November through March, the Festi-Neige is an action-packed winter festival that includes an array of free activities, from ice skating on Lac des Sables to fireworks, dog-sleigh races and winter slides. Of particular note is the P’tit Train du Nord, a disused railway line from Montréal to Mont-Laurier that runs through Ste-Agathe. Today it is a gloriously scenic trail for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing during the winter months. In and around town, particularly near the lakefront, there are some excellent restaurants and inns, and boutiques galore.
