Regina

Regina is a mid-sized city in the heart of the Canadian prairies. Originally known as “Pile O’ Bones,” after mounds of buffalo skeletons left behind by Aboriginal people, Regina grew as the headquarters of the Northwest Territories and is today the provincial capital of Saskatchewan (although neighboring Saskatoon, to the north, has a larger population). Unlike most other prairie cities, Regina was not built beside a river. Instead, a small spring-fed creek was dammed by early settlers and now forms the heart of Wascana Centre, one of North America’s largest urban parks. Surrounded by greenspace, many of the city’s major attractions, as well as the provincial legislative building, overlook the park. Surrounding the city is seemingly endless farmland, a number of parks, and thousands of lakes that attract hordes of local vacationers throughout the summer.
