Known simply as "Playa" by locals, and PDC by others, this small seaside village exploded as Cancún grew in popularity and continues to expand apace as more foreign visitors get hip to its existence. It will, one day, become too big for its beaches, but for now, it's a good, centrally-located base for people who need amenities and want to jump between Cozumel, the Maya Riviera and points north. Besides, it's a tenth of the size, population-wise, of Cancún and so makes a more intimate choice for those who wish to have some Mexican and Mayan culture mixed in with their vacation. Shore dives and snorkeling are both possible here, which is in keeping with Playa's mañana vibe. Still, some of the world's best diving is just a quick ferry ride away on Cozumel, should you get motivated. Playa has many vacation homes for rent and makes a good family getaway, plus there's McDonald's, Haagen Dazs and other familiar, kid-friendly food.
