With a flurry of wings and a symphony of sound, thousands of sandhill cranes are drawn every year to the Platte River Valley north of Hastings. And hundreds of bird watchers gather to marvel at this annual migration. From March to May, more than 250 species of waterfowl flock to the Hastings area. The Hastings Museum of Natural and Cultural History features habitat dioramas of wildlife for folks who want an up-close view of these fascinating creatures. Founded in 1872 after the railroad came through, Hastings is also the place where Kool-Aid was invented. As a young boy, Edwin Perkins was fascinated with chemistry and set out to invent a powdered drink. Years later in 1927, he did and it became known as Kool-Aid, an inexpensive and tasty beverage. Hastings celebrates that heritage during the second week of each August with Kool-Aid Days. During World War II, Hastings became the site of a huge U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot. No longer active, the depot's ten miles of covered walkways and storage bunkers are still visible. For baseball fans, Duncan Field on Elm and South streets is a must see. Built in 1940, this sports field is where All Star Johnny Hopp and Hall of Famer Yogi Berra played as kids.
