Nebraska is a state best seen through its scenic drives, including one of its most popular modern trails — the Great Platte River Road. Native Americans named the area "nebrathnka" or "flat water" in honor of the Platte River.

Becoming the 37th state in 1867, Nebraska abounds with historic spots. Near Crawford is Fort Robinson State Park, where Sioux Chief Crazy Horse was killed in 1877. Stop by the 800-foot-tall Scotts Bluff National Monument, an important landmark for pioneer travelers. Looming over the Platte River, the huge rock was called the "Lighthouse of the Prairie." Even today, the deep ruts made by Conestoga wagons mark the prairie.

For an impressive show by Mother Nature, visit Grand Island, where for six weeks during March and April, 80 percent of the world's sandhill cranes alight on an eight-mile stretch of the Platte River along with other species of waterfowl.
