Overview

Set on the Columbia River, at the western base of Oregon’s highest peak, Hood River is a quiet little town with a big reputation for winter fun. The peak that provides all the fun is Mt. Hood, a dormant, 11,240-foot stratovolcano with twelve glaciers and – so it is said – the longest ski season in North America. Given the fact that Timberline resort (33 miles from Hood River) keeps its Palmer Snowfield open for skiing all year long, it’s a hard claim to refute. For those who would rather snowshoe, cross country ski or sled, there are plenty of options all within a short distance of town. Snowfall can be low, and the snow itself can be wet, so it’s always good to check conditions closely before visiting. But when it’s good, it’s great.
