That thwack of the club as it hits the ball, the hollow sound of the cup after a successful putt, the aroma of fresh cut grass and the giddiness that ticks your heart at the first tee: this is why people play golf, and this is why they come, in droves, to Hilton Head. Stunning, challenging oceanfront courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and the Fazio brothers attract golfers from all over the world. At 60 square miles, Hilton Head is South Carolina's largest barrier island. It sits between low country estuary and the Atlantic Ocean, and much of it is hidden behind gated golf resorts. Still, the island has fantastic beaches and some 25 miles of biking paths, pretty nature preserves and great spots for kayaking. The island is also a gastronomic treat, from burger joints and seafood shacks to wine bars and 5-star restaurants.
