Overlooking the Lynn Canal, Haines is a gem. It has none of the tourism overload of Skagway farther up the fjord. What it does have is an authenticity and beauty that has casual visitors soon checking the windows of the town's handful of real estate agents. Set on a narrow peninsula, the town is close to the Chilkoot River, one of the world's best places to see bald eagles. First-timers often stop in slack-jawed awe when they get their first glimpse of one of these iconic raptors. And the wonder continues even after the hundredth. In fact in late fall, trees along the river's wide, flat waters are filled with bald eagles like something out of Hitchcock's "The Birds." The Haines Highway follows the river for some 20 miles and then climbs steeply into Canada where for the next 100 miles you travel through gorgeous, wild lands riven by glaciers. All around Haines are state parks and campgrounds, many right on the water. Sitting by a campfire on a crisp and seemingly endless summer evening is intoxicating. Hiking, biking and kayaking are just some of the activities people pursue in and around Haines. At night enjoy a Haines Brewing cold one while watching the cruise-boat hordes float past to and from Skagway. You can reach Haines by fast ferry (under two hours) from Juneau.
