Alaska's capital is a mandatory stop for travelers of all stripes, whether those bobbing past on cruise ships or those on the more adventurous and delightful Alaska ferries. It's sheltered from the drama of the Inside Passage, which is reason enough to visit southeast Alaska. Reachable only by air or sea, Juneau is not some lost backwater but rather a community with the sort of crusty, creative character that defines the state. The center cascades down a hillside overlooking the port and reminds many of a tiny San Francisco. Travel just a few miles (you can't go far as every road literally goes nowhere) and you encounter a great variety of rugged scenery. Tops is the Mendenhall Glacier, a vast river of ice descending from the icy peaks beyond. Global warming skeptics need to check out the US Forest Service displays in the visitor center showing its shocking retreat in the past few years. Outside, protected walkways take you right over black bears feeding on salmon nabbed from the wild streams. Part nature, part idiosyncratic masterpiece, Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure is touristy but combines beauty with one man's vision for his own patch of wilderness.
