Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Free Travel Deals Newsletter
Covering more than 13 million acres, America's largest national park has been designated a United Nations World Heritage Site. Although not as well known as Denali or Glacier Bay, Wrangell-St. Elias contains some of the wildest country imaginable, with nine of the 16 highest mountains in North America, massive glaciers and icefields, rivers teaming with salmon, abundant wildlife, and the most picturesque historical structures in Alaska. The vast majority of the park is wilderness - high mountains, boreal forests, glaciers, and alpine tundra - but visitors flock to the old copper mining towns at the end of a challenging 60-mile dirt road in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias. The road ends at the Kennicott River, with a footbridge providing access to McCarthy with its quaint false-front businesses, and the brick-red mining buildings (last used in 1938) of Kennecott Mine. Guides lead hikes onto Kennicott Glacier or through the historic structures. Other options include river rafting, flightseeing, and backcountry treks. Visit park headquarters at Copper Center for a panoramic view across the Copper River and a fine film about the park.
