Flagstaff's mountain character comes from its setting at the base of Arizona's highest summit and the cool breezes that blow through the surrounding ponderosa pines. You'll also feel its heritage of railroading, logging, and ranching while you wander among the historic buildings downtown. Northern Arizona University adds a layer of sophistication with a lively café scene, scholarly research, arts, and sports. Expect a changeable climate at this 7,000-foot elevation, with late-summer thunderstorms and usually short-lived winter snowstorms. Be sure to visit the excellent Museum of Northern Arizona to learn about the natural history and Native American cultures of the region. Other good museums introduce Flagstaff's history, art, and astronomy. Networks of hiking trails ascend dramatic volcanoes just outside town for easy loops or challenging climbs, including a trail to the 12,633-foot summit of Mt. Humphrey. Nearby Sunset Crater Volcano is the prettiest of them all, although its slopes are too fragile for climbing. East of town you can peer into a monumental blast site - Meteor Crater. Archaeological sites of Walnut Canyon and Wupatki National Monuments protect well-preserved pueblos in pretty settings.
