Metro Phoenix, including Scottsdale, Tempe and Mesa, sits in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. It is a maze of roadways, 200-plus golf courses and mega-resorts. Saguaro (sa-war-oe) cacti stand like soldiers, jutting out of sandy, brush landscape much like the many shopping malls and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West. Taliesin is a good example of how Wright was able to merge his architectural skills with the desert. While the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation concentrates on structures, the Heard Museum focuses on native cultures. It showcases a fine collection of Native American jewelry, clothing, art and ethnic objects. Clothes, objects and whatever are available at power shopper paradises like Biltmore Fashion Mall and Scottsdale Fashion Square. For galleries and boutiques, there is Old Scottsdale. Many visitors are content to stay at their hotel and just play golf. Most resorts have links where guests can swing their clubs as well as snazzy spas for scrubs and rubs. Metro Phoenix has been dubbed the Spa Capital of the World because of its excellent spas.
