Step back in time to the early 20th century and relive the days when Route 66 led America's motorists to the busy downtown, railway passengers thronged the luxurious La Posada Hotel, and Charles Lindbergh came to design Winslow Airfield. Airliners no longer stop here, but you can still arrive by train or car and enjoy the fine dining, grand halls, and comfortable rooms of La Posada, which threw open its doors in 1930. Architect Mary Colter let loose her imagination in designing it, creating not so much a hotel as a grand hacienda that would have made an 18th-century Spanish don proud; you're welcome to tour the public spaces. A six-block stroll along the First Street Pathway, lined with historic exhibits, takes you from the hotel to the Hubbell Trading Post building. Also downtown, drop by Old Trails Historical Museum for a look into early Winslow. Fans of the music group The Eagles will enjoy a stop at "Standin' on the Corner" Park. Explore prehistoric pueblo villages in Homolovi Ruins State Park, just three miles northeast of Winslow, but check first to make sure that it's open. Clear Creek, five miles south of town, offers canoeing, fishing, bird watching, and camping.
