Climb atop nearby Devil’s Postpile National Monument, where 60-foot stacks of six-sided basalt columns were formed when molten lava cooled and cracked. A short distance from there is Rainbow Falls — where the San Joaquin River charges right off a cliff, providing a refreshing summer hiking goal for a picnic lunch. Mammoth Lakes is a family-friendly destination, with activities and fun for all ages.
