Overview
This four-season resort area in the Eastern Sierra doesn’t close down at the end of ski season. It’s said that Mammoth Lakes visitors “come for winter, but stay for summer,” and with the towering peaks, glistening lakes and wealth of outdoor activities, it’s no wonder that Mammoth is a great summer destination. It’s at the edges of the Ansel Adams Wilderness and John Muir Wilderness, both with breathtaking views and tons of trails for hikers to enjoy. Bikers can pick from a variety of trail options — even including off-season ski trails. Anglers can catch their own trout dinner (or breakfast, or lunch) in the area lakes. Climb atop nearby Devil’s Postpile National Monument, where 60-foot stacks of six-sided basalt columns were formed when molten lava cooled and cracked. A short distance from there is Rainbow Falls — where the San Joaquin River charges right off a cliff, providing a refreshing summer hiking goal for a picnic lunch. Mammoth Lakes is a family-friendly destination, with activities and fun for all ages.
