Monterey & Carmel

Recognized internationally for its gnarled Monterey cypress twisted by cold ocean winds, and immortalized in John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row, the Monterey Peninsula has heaps of unique character. Chinese and Italians built a fishing port and sardine cannery here in the 1880s. Today, Monterey thrives on tourism. Monterey Bay Aquarium, built over the waters at the end of Cannery Row, awes with its magnificent marine exhibits. Its waters open directly to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary - a vast marine habitat for sea otters, dolphins, sharks and whales to thrive. Immediately south of Monterey, the genteel town of Carmel supports a thriving artists' colony. Paid entrance to 17-Mile Drive grants a chance to "ooh" and "aahh" at some of the world's most spectacular coastal scenery. The world-famous Pebble Beach golf course is here, too. And the Carmel Mission chapel, founded in 1771, is one of the original Spanish missions founded by Father Junipero Serra. Protecting a dramatic peninsula with coastal trails, Point Lobos State Reserve, at the southern end of Carmel Bay, incorporates the first U.S. underwater reserve and is a great place to spot sea lions.
