Of all of the California coastline, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve might just be the most beautiful. Consider the elements: trails pass cypress and Monterey pine trees growing off cliffs as if in a Tim Burton film; then they ribbon along the coastline offering unsurpassed vistas of California's bluest sea (seriously, you'll usually see water this color only in the tropics). The waters teem with wildlife including whales, dolphins, sharks, sea lions, seals, and craggy islands blanketed with cormorants, pelicans and more. Friends of the park boast that there are more than 250 animal species having fun here. Since Portuguese whalers found this hidden coast in the 1800s, people have been smitten with this landscape, and you will not be an exception. Whether you wander the trails, dive into the kelp forest, run along the coast, climb a cypress, or merely read the newspaper on a bench, you'll find this overlooked park beckons you back time and time again.
