Based on its proximity to jaw-dropping nature, Redding may be Northern California's best city to set up camp for a few days. Based on its proximity to jaw-dropping nature, Redding may be Northern California's best city to set up camp for a few days. For years, the largest city in the Shasta Cascade region hadn't won many awards in the culture or food departments — her artsy baby sister town Chico hadn't rubbed off on her much — but recently this city once dubbed Poverty Flats has begun adding new accessories to draw a double-take from passersby. Most impressive is the Sundial Bridge, erected by famed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, which accurately tells the time on the summer solstice and connects the Turtle Bay museum complexes. Water sports enthusiasts have long gathered in Redding to paddle through the center of town on the Sacramento River, waterski or drink brews on houseboats at Lake Shasta, or kayak Whiskeytown Lake. Within a short drive, you can hike the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, climb the crags at Castle Crags, marvel at gushing waterfalls, and spend a day (or three) exploring Lassen Volcanic National Park. The spruced up Cascade Theater, the arrival of farm-to-table eateries along the riverfront, and even some Central Valley inspired wine bars will make your evenings downright pleasant.
