History lovers, especially those interested in the Gold Rush era, find plenty to appreciate at Shasta State Historic Park, located six-miles west of Redding. The aging brick structures remind visitors that this town was once the queen of the region, bursting with riches and residents. And though now it is merely a ghost town, barely saved from oblivion by the California State Parks, historians will be intrigued. Start at the Courthouse Museum, which was once the "official" place where disputes were settled (though if you know about the rough Gold Rush history that might give you a chuckle), now the museum acts as a visitor center and interactive museum, showcasing California art over 100 years. Pay attention to the resident ghost who lives in the jail before heading out to explore the historic brick buildings lining the street, including the Litsch Store and the Blumb Bakery, which churns out traditional baked goods on weekends. The park is open on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Stroll the 19 acres past cottage ruins, forgotten barns, a cemetery, and a picnic area under the shady oaks.
