Overview

Most people visit Sonoma to sip and swirl wine; however, there is another reason folks sojourn here: to see the northernmost mission in California. Constructed between 1823 and 1832 when Mexico ruled California, two of the original buildings still stand. Inside are exhibits, a museum and a gift shop. History buffs will also appreciate the architectural tour of the 1800s by exploring the structures surrounding the central plaza. History buffs will also appreciate the architectural tour of the 1800s by exploring the structures surrounding the central plaza. Meander through the barracks (which later served as General Vallejo's winery), the adobe Blue Wing Inn, the Toscano Hotel (home to an interpretive center and the park headquarters), and the Servants' Quarters. About a mile off the Sonoma square, you can wander through General Vallejo's compound (complete with original furnishings inside); Lachryma Montis, as the home is also referred to, was the estate of the military commander and Director of Colonization of the Northern Frontier.
