Sonoma State Historic Park

Most people visit Sonoma to sip and swirl wine; however, there is another reason folks sojourn here: to see the northernmost mission in California. Constructed between 1823 and 1832 when Mexico ruled California, two of the original buildings still stand. Inside are exhibits, a museum and a gift shop. About a mile off the Sonoma square, you can wander through General Vallejo's compound (complete with original furnishings inside); Lachryma Montis, as the home is also referred to, was the estate of the military commander and Director of Colonization of the Northern Frontier.
