One of the most beautiful and overcooked cities in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, Aspen is world-famous for incredible skiing, shopping, restaurants and hotels as well as mountain hamlets that cost tens of millions of dollars. The city has a charming downtown area filled with hipster hotels and gourmet restaurants, and it's located directly beneath four towering mountains - Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, and Buttermilk, all of which attract skiers by the BMW-load. But it's one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., so celebrities such as Jack Nicholson, Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn and Chris Evert are among the elite few who can live there. The bars are inviting, the town square centers on the serene Aspen Fountain, and if you have the time and money, there's no better place to wander, whether it's through the town square or in the surrounding mountain wilderness. It's also oddly laid-back, and even the snootiest restaurants and hotels are experienced in getting high-powered guests to relax.
