A bit of a rich person's playground in recent years, pretty Crested Butte actually refers to two separate areas, connected by shuttle bus. One is the pastel-colored, Victorian-lined, 1880s mountain town that has the feel of a funkier Breckenridge or Steamboat Springs; the other is the 40-plus-year-old ski resort two miles uphill that's officially known as Mount Crested Butte. In the summer, mountain-bikers take over the town, indulging in famous local rides such as Pearl Pass, site of the annual "Klunker Tour," and the raucous late-June Fat Tire Bike Tour. Some say Crested Butte tinkerers came up with the original mountain bike, and while that's impossible to verify, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame tracks this history and describes more than a dozen bike trails of varying degrees of difficulty. Crested Butte is also big on the hot-air balloon circuit. The village is a lovingly preserved National Historic District of colorful Victorian buildings, some of which have retained their identities as saloons and banks. Wandering downtown is a great way to kill a lazy summer Saturday, and the large park along 6th Street often has live music and kids' events.
