Northeast Colorado

The Eastern Plains, which is to say, the eastern third of the rectangular State of Colorado, are flat and uneventful prairie land, compared to the vibrant mountain regions. Driving into northeastern Colorado, you'll feel the car begin to climb around Sterling (home of the Overland Trail Museum, filled with Native American artifacts) and might consider a stop in Crook (home of the 7,000-acre Tamarack Ranch State Wildlife Area) or Fort Morgan (around the massive Pawnee National Grassland, which goes on and on and on but is a great spot for bird- and animal-watching). Unlike other parts of Colorado, the wide-open spaces, cornfields and endless views of the horizon are just barely equipped for tourists. The few nice motels tend to be chains, and the restaurants lean more toward "truck-stop diner" than "elegant bistro." Wanderers will find high points, however: history museums like the pink-and-red Genoa Tower in Limon, filled with Native American artifacts and Old West kitsch; reservoirs and tiny lakes, a lure for pheasant-hunters and fishers; county fairs even in the smallest of towns; conservative farming-and-ranching towns Greeley and Sterling; and the Greeley Independence Stampede, a country-music-and-rodeo festival that draws 500,000 Garth Brooks-loving fans every year.
