Steamboat Springs is one of Colorado's many world-class ski areas, but few of the town's winter tourists know Norwegian Carl Howelsen basically invented the entire industry here in 1912. Howelsen set up a wooden ski jump in this former ranching and farming community, invited people to watch (and follow) and today his namesake ski-jumping hill is featured prominently a few blocks from town. At an elevation of almost 7,000 feet, "Ski Town USA" is about an hour from Interstate 70, or more than two hours from Denver International Airport, and therefore the most remote of the ski towns in the northern Colorado Rockies. It's worth the trip, though, even in the summer - the mountain views are some of the best in Summit County, and the town is small and (relatively) quiet compared to Vail or Breckenridge. For the most part, the hotels and restaurants are affordable, and bonuses like horse-riding facilities, the nearby Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs and the surrounding Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest make Steamboat a worthwhile destination in spring and summer as well.
