Vail & Beaver Creek

Vail has been synonymous with skiing since the world-class resort opened in 1962, but especially since President Gerald Ford made headlines with his visit in the 1970s. While non-skiers may find Vail Resorts' "company town" overcrowded and obsessed with moguls and goggles, the area is scenic and laid-back, with a handful of great restaurants and hotels and a central village for high-end shopping. The White River National Forest surrounds the area, and local entrepreneurs provide mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, hot-air ballooning and even llama trekking. Vail is also a big festival town, with the Teva Mountain Games in the winter and the Brews and Chili Festival and the Annual Vail Jazz Party in the summer. Watch for off-season deals, especially immediately post-ski season when inventory-shedding restaurants invite tourists to "drink the bar dry." The Vail resort is the anchor of Vail Valley, the broad area around I-70 that includes generic Eagle, quaint Minturn, growing Edwards and hoity-toity Beaver Creek. The latter town is like one giant suburban mall, but the Ritz-Carlton is the Rockies' best hotel this side of Aspen and the ice-skating rink is a lot of fun.
