Hartford lies in the folds of the Connecticut River as it turns toward the sea. The vibrancy of the city derives from its role as capital of Connecticut and the fact that for more than a century it has been known as the insurance capital of the United States. That industry still dominates the city. Hartford's airport is about 20 miles away in Windsor Locks and is home to the New England Air Museum with 125 aircraft on display, including a B-29. In summer, the Connecticut River is popular for water sports and river cruises. Hartford was the home of Mark Twain and his impressive Victorian mansion is open to visitors. Adjacent to the Twain house is the home of the Civil War-era author and anti-slavery activist Harriet Beecher Stowe. The city is committed to the fine arts and supports its own symphony orchestra as well as dance companies that offer performances — be sure to check the schedule of the Bushnell Performing Arts Center. The Wadsworth Athenaeum is Hartford's major museum and is the oldest art museum in the United States with more than 45,000 works in its collection. It regularly hosts traveling and special exhibits.
