Founded by Puritans, who thought 17th-century Massachusetts was too liberal, New Haven is now best known as the home of Yale University, which brings with it all the attractions of a world-renowned center of learning and culture and all the amenities of a college town. Roughly 125,000 people live in New Haven, so the city is not just about the university that has trained three of America's recent presidents. It's a major transportation hub, a commercial port city, a rising center of cuisine, a treasure trove of architecture from all periods of American history. It claims further fame as the birthplace of Eli Whitney's first commercial cotton gins, the Colt revolver, lollipops, and (controversially) hamburgers and Frisbees. The city's major sites center around Yale, where visitors are welcome to visit art collections and other museums, as well as the outstanding Peabody Museum, rivaled only by the Peabody Museum at Harvard. Amtrak makes New Haven equally convenient from New York and Boston.
