Synonymous with luxury, Boca Raton has long been an outpost for well-to-do travelers who congregated at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a classy 1926 hotel still serving up the luxe life to its guests today. While its first settlers grew pineapples, the character of the town swiftly changed as fortunes grew during the Florida land boom. The city fathers envisioned a planned community with a Spanish theme, and commissioned architect Addison Mizner to create a resort destination. Many civic buildings created during this period still stand as fine testaments to Spanish Mission architecture, and pale pink is a reoccurring color theme on historic structures. Modern-day Boca is known for its tony shops and eateries, but encompasses much more than Mizner Park. A superb beachfront is protected by a string of city parks. City limits stretch westward to encompass the edge of the Everglades, best reached via the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Throughout the county, family-friendly parks and preserves with nature centers offer a quiet counterpoint to the bustle of the shopping centers and the coast, introducing visitors to mangrove-lined shores, tropical forests, and piney woods.
