“There are no other Everglades in the world,” wrote Marjory Stoneman Dougla, journalist and advocate for the creation of Everglades National Park, in her landmark book Everglades: River of Grass. We can thank her today for her dogged persistence, her relationship building that led to the protection of more than 1.5 million acres today of an ecosystem dependent on a slow sheet flow of water southwards. Expansive sawgrass prairies are broken up by tree islands topped with dense thickets of tropical trees, and limestone ridges where scrawny but durable slash pines grow. It is a wilderness that invites immersion, spiritually and literally, whether it be by paddling your kayak along narrow channels between the mangroves or taking a quiet walk on one of the many well-defined nature trails throughout the park. Along its coast with Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, the Everglades are protected by barrier islands with mucky beaches and a tangled jungle of mangroves. This is a place where mosquitoes are abundant, and only abate in the dead of winter, yet visitors come here for unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities. Plan accordingly…and don’t bring your pets!
