Emerging from a storied past as Camp Murphy, a World War II facility where the U.S. Army taught technicians a new tool that would help win the war – radar – this decommissioned base is now the largest outdoor playground in Southeast Florida. Jonathan Dickinson State Park encompasses a vast wilderness along the wild and scenic Loxahatchee River between Hobe Sound and Jupiter, stretching from US 1 west beyond Florida’s Turnpike. Within the developed portion of the park, between two distinctly different campgrounds and a string of modern cabins, there is mountain biking on the Camp Murphy Trail, day hiking and backpacking on the East Loop and Kitching Creek trails, and an easy climb to Hobe Mountain – the highest natural point in South Florida, from which you can see the Atlantic Ocean and the vast forests along the Loxahatchee River. River tours depart from the concession area to the island to the historic homestead, zoo, and jungle gardens of Trapper Nelson, and canoe and kayak rentals are available for your own exploration of the Loxahatchee River.
