The northernmost of the Florida Keys, Key Largo is a dream destination for anyone wanting to visit a coral reef without venturing outside of the United States. Home to the country’s only state park with a living coral reef, Key Largo is a magnet for divers and snorkelers of all stripes. But it’s not just about the water. Key Largo contains the largest tropical hammock in the United States, the “land of the little giants” where National Champion tropical trees thrive. Endangered American crocodiles thrive in the salt lagoons of Crocodile Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. And yes, there’s even a touch of Bogie — while the movie Key Largo was set here, it wasn’t shot here. But some enterprising soul bought the African Queen, the boat from the film, and you can visit it (when it’s not out on a charter) at the Holiday Inn Marina. With resorts tucked beneath tropical trees and beaches with swaying coconut palms, Key Largo is such an appealing introduction to the Florida Keys that you might not venture farther west.
