Overview

At Black Rock Mountain State Park, you can feel the temperature drop as you climb 2,700 feet up the steep grade to the top of the 3,640-foot summit. Backcountry trails, waterfalls, a trout-stocked lake, and cottages and campgrounds nestled in the woods near the summit are attractions enough, but Black Rock Mountain is also a good base of operations for the many sights of surrounding Rabun County, including popular rafting excursions on the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River at the South Carolina border. The park's trail to scenic Ada-Hi Falls is only a fifth of a mile, but in that distance the trail drops 220 feet. The 2-mile Tennessee Rock Trail is where to place yourself at sunset with a picnic. The 7.2-mile backcountry trail follows the forested ridge crest up and down across creeks, under stands of white pine, through a hemlock forest and thickets of fragrant mountain laurel to a vista point on 3,162-foot Lookoff Mountain.
