Macon is a pretty Southern town on the banks of the Ocmulgee River. With more structures on the National Register of Historic Places than any other city in Georgia, Macon has some fine antebellum homes in a historic district that's worth walking around. The city also has some fun, quirky museums. Unbeknownst to many, Georgia has given birth to many world-famous musicians and they are celebrated at the excellent Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Inductees include the Allman Brothers Band, Indigo Girls, Ray Charles, Chet Atkins, Gladys Knight and James Brown, to name a few. At the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, honorees include Hank Aaron, Evander Holyfield and Bobby Jones. When Macon's 250,000 Japanese Yoshino cherry trees burst into pink puffs in late-March, the town celebrates with the Cherry Blossom Festival, an extravaganza of music, food and festivities.
