Overview

Set out on a peninsula in a remote corner of the Okefenokee Swamp, Stephen C. Foster State Park provides access to the heart of the swamp, where traces of the refuge's human history can still be seen. Okefenokee comes from the Seminole term "ecunnau finocau," a reference to the "trembling earth" of floating peat throughout the swamp that can barely sustain a person's weight. The waterland forests of cypress, with knobby "knees" rising mysteriously from the tannin-stained blackwater, drew loggers in the 1850s, and where now you hear nothing but bird song and the splash of jumping fish there were once railroads, canals, and homesteads. This history can be glimpsed on an excursion by boat from the state park dock out to Billy's Island, where an aboriginal mound, pioneer cemetery, and chimney foundations remain. Or follow canoe trails through the wilderness watching for alligators, turtles, woodstorks, and the occasional bald eagle. Farther down the Suwanee River (composer Stephen C. Foster called it "Swanee" in his famous song "The Old Folks at Home"), the park's new eco-lodge offers modern lodging next to a new interpretive center.
