Overview

A grandiose hotel named for a prince spills down a seacliff with a drop dead view of Hanalei Bay and 4,000 foot waterfall-laced Namolokama mountains that conjure up mythic Bali Hai. With marble and gilt (and tuxedoed butlers), Princeville Hotel is the temple of hedonism on Kauai's North Shore- where "people in Heaven go after they die." A grandiose hotel named for a prince spills down a seacliff with a drop dead view of Hanalei Bay and 4,000 foot waterfall-laced Namolokama mountains that conjure up mythic Bali Hai. With marble and gilt (and tuxedoed butlers), Princeville Hotel is the temple of hedonism on Kauai's North Shore- where "people in Heaven go after they die." The hotel, named for Prince Albert, crowns an 11,000-acre golf resort with a mini mall, suburban houses, condos, time shares, a pocket beach and private airport. Full of rainbows (and daily showers) where rice once grew, Hanalei Valley is protected by a one-lane bridge that stops developers from spoiling down-to-earth Hanalei, where, sooner or later, everyone goes to eat, shop, and plunge in the half moon bay. Nature calls you down the coast to the end of Kuhio Highway where choices are snorkeling the lagoon at Ke'e Beach State Park or hiking narrow Na Pali trail to Kalalau Valley. Visit Waioli Mission House, see endangered native plants at Limahuli Gardens, photograph Lumahai Beach, which starred in "South Pacific." Look for boobies and whales in deep blue water off Kiluaea Lighthouse. Golfers play on two championship golf courses, adventurers kayak down the coast, or take a trail ride to a waterfall. Those wanting the big picture go up in a helicopter. And everyone departs with reluctance the day they return to reality.
