Overview

Like many mid-western American cities, Joliet sprang up along a river in the mid-19th century. Historical data show that the area was explored in 1673 by two French Canadians, Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marguette, who camped along the Des Plaines River. Joliet's location on both sides of the river made it a prosperous city. It was one of the major ports for the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and in the 1850s the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern and Santa Fe railroads came through here. Joliet also sits on famous Route 66, and Joliet Kicks on Route 66 offers walking and driving tours of the route through downtown, the Route 66 Park, and the Route 66 Experience, a repository of memorabilia of the era. Step back in time at the Joliet Area Historical Museum's exhibits depicting life in the 19th century. The Chicagoland Speedway hosts sell out crowds at every NASCAR event. At the Route 66 Raceway you can drive a stock car around the track. The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie has 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
