Home of the Indiana University Hoosiers and the Little 500 bike race featured in the movie "Breaking Away," Bloomington is a charming city with tree-lined streets, world-class music and a vibrant downtown. Nestled amidst rolling hills, Bloomington offers big city excitement combined with hospitable Midwestern charm. Founded in 1824 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, IU is a lovely strolling campus with its local limestone architecture and shady paths. Clustered around the 1902 courthouse, the downtown area covers 11 blocks and boasts a wide array of specialty retail shops, restaurants and live music clubs. It's not uncommon to see resident rocker John Mellencamp around town or the man called "the best rock-and-roll drummer in the world" Kenny Aronoff hitting the golf links. Both live here. Master violinist Joshua Bell often visits his hometown and is a senior lecturer at the world-renowned IU Jacobs School of Music. The Dalai Lama also visits frequently since his brother, a retired IU professor, lived here until his death in 2008 and the nation's only Tibetan Culture Center is in Bloomington. Ten miles southeast of town, 12,500-acre Lake Monroe is the state's largest man-made lake and a major recreational playground.
