Once jokingly referred to as "India-no-place," Indianapolis has enjoyed a revival in the last two decades that has transformed it into a cultural and sports mecca. At the heart of the striking renaissance is White River State Park, a 250-acre oasis in the middle of the city that offers museums, a zoo, professional baseball team and an outdoor performance venue. Canal Walk is a popular promenade with jogging paths, pedestrian bridge, antique streetlights, walkways and murals depicting scenes of Indiana life. On the north side of the walk is a memorial to the legendary USS Indianapolis, the World War II flagship sunk by a Japanese torpedo two weeks before the war ended. Of the 1,197 men aboard ship, about 900 survived the sinking and were thrown into the shark-infested waters. When rescued five days later, only 316 were still alive. Today, Indianapolis is home to the best minor league ballpark in America, the new Lucas Oil Stadium for the Super Bowl champion Colts, more veterans memorials and monuments than any other city except Washington, D.C., a $1 billion upgraded airport, an acclaimed Children's Museum, the world's only underwater dolphin viewed experience at the Indianapolis Zoo, and, of course, the "greatest spectacle in racing" - the Indy 500.
