Michigan City's early settlers came from Europe and brought their ethnic diversity and rich cultural traditions. At one time, Michigan City had the largest Lebanese population in America. Stroll the historic Downtown District to enjoy a melting pot of architecture. Bordering Lake Michigan - on a clear day you can see the Chicago skyline across the lake - Michigan City is known as "The Coho Capital of the World." Waters abound with coho salmon and trout and charter fishing is abundant. Washington Park Zoo is home to 250 animals at its 15 acres on a hilly sand dune close to the lake. The zoo started in the 1920s when a retired animal trainer moved his brown bear "Jake" to the lakefront. Other rescued animals were added to keep Jake company and draw visitors. In those days, the local fire department often took in abandoned exotic animals so the menagerie quickly grew. The zoo is now a pleasant place to spend some time. Climb the observation tower at the zoo for a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. Often a symbol for Michigan City, the lighthouse is a favorite spot for photographers, artists and folks who love to watch the sunset.
