Settled in 1838, Cedar Rapids is a pick-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps kind of city. It has to be, because it's situated on an enormous river, the Cedar River, that in 2008 swamped the 500-year flood plain set for it, overflowing on both banks, swallowing up thirteen hundred city blocks or nine square miles, displacing four thousand residents and businesses. Repairs started immediately after the flood waters receded and put the city back in shape. In 1989 the classic baseball movie Field of Dreams was filmed in nearby Dyersville. The cornfield that Kevin Costner plowed under is still a baseball diamond where you can watch Iowa minor league teams play. Regionalist artist Grant Wood left his mark on his home state. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art has the world's largest collection of his works; the Grant Wood Trail stretches across the state from Des Moines to Iowa City and incorporates museums, colleges and libraries with his artwork, his house, gallery and studio. A visit to the Queen Anne style mansion of Brucemore, built in 1885, will give you a look at the city's industrialist history. For outdoor activities there's a network of parks, lakes and trails for swimming, fishing, hiking, biking and walking.
