Overview

Kansas City in Wyandotte County Kansas is the younger sister of Kansas City Missouri. Yes, it is a spin-off of the “other” Kansas City, having been formed in 1868. The city is situated at Kaw Point where the Kansas River terminates at the Missouri River. This parcel of land was bought from the French as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In 1804 the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped at what is now Kaw Point Riverfront Park mapping out the area for Fort Osage, built in 1808. Now a National Historic Landmark, living history demonstrations are given here telling about early 19th century military and civilian life. Kansas City is famous for NASCAR racing at the Kansas Speedway, with everything from monster trucks to big name car racers. The WyCo Historical Society and Museum and the Strawberry Hill Museum have exhibits detailing the history of the area and other countries. Cabela Outfitters is not to be missed, miles of displays of outdoor gear and a museum devoted to mule deer. Great places for children are the Moon Marble Store with marbles of every shape, color and size, and Schlitterbahn Waterpark offering a multitude of water activities.
