The village of Stonington looks a great deal like it did a century and a half ago, its solid buildings running alongside a harbor where fishing boats outnumber yachts. The village of Stonington looks a great deal like it did a century and a half ago, its solid buildings running alongside a harbor where fishing boats outnumber yachts. A little ferry stops here to take passengers to Isle au Haut, where the lighthouse has a B&B in the keeper’s cottage. One look at the islands that dot the harbor explain the town’s name – granite outcrops are everywhere, and the blocks quarried here were loaded onto boats to help build cities all along the Northeast coast. Connected to the peninsula by a long suspension bridge is Deer Isle, whose spruce-covered shore is broken by a few fishing harbors and the villages that cluster around them. Pretty Castine is one of New England’s most historic towns, having lived under four flags – French, Dutch, British, and American – since its settlement in the 1600s. Over 100 historical markers guide visitors as they visit the 1760 British Fort George and Fort Madison, which was built by the Americans in 1811 only to fall to the British in the War of 1812. Among its many buildings from the 1700s is the John Perkins House, restored and furnished as part of a museum complex that includes Native American artifacts, ship models and a blacksmith shop.
