Moosehead Lake sits in the middle of a vast wilderness of forests and wetlands that stretches north, east and west to the Canadian border. Moosehead Lake sits in the middle of a vast wilderness of forests and wetlands that stretches north, east and west to the Canadian border. And although it has seen flurries of activity – from the moneyed city summer people at the turn of the 20th century to the rough-and-ready loggers half a century later – it has mostly remained a secret getaway spot for those who love fishing, canoeing, snowmobiling and other outdoor activities. More recently, eco-tourists have begun to discover this unspoiled region, along with rafters and kayakers drawn to its fast-moving rivers. The Appalachian Trail winds through the region, and the famed Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has an outdoor center, Little Lyford Lodge, deep in the woods nearby. But it’s not all for the hardy outdoors types. There are boat trips on the historic steamship Katahdin, cozy country inns and lodges and an outstanding museum run by the local historical society. Bird life and moose are so plentiful that visitors can see them without having to venture into the wilds. Winter is almost as active as summer here, with snowmobile groups and a series of winter events that include dogsled races and auto racing on the frozen lake.
