The entire region is paradise for canoeists and kayakers, with paddle-in campsites located around the lakes. Paddle sports are only part of the area’s appeal to those who love the outdoors. Two major ski areas – Saddleback Mountain and Sugarloaf – are here, the Appalachian Trail crosses through, the lakes and streams are famed for their fishing and in the winter Rangeley is Snowmobile Central. Cross-country ski trails are everywhere. Side paths from the Appalachian Trail lead to natural attractions including Piazza Rock, a huge overhanging cantilevered slab of granite that can also be reached by a short hike from a road. As if all this weren’t enough, the road between the towns of Rangeley and Stratton, Route 16, is one of the state’s prime moose-watching areas. The two ski areas assure that there will be dining and nightlife, and visitors can learn about the region’s former principal industry at the Rangeley Lakes Logging Museum, whose collections include log sleds, saws and machinery along with hundreds of other artifacts. Stanley Steamers are on display in the hometown of their inventor, at Kingfield’s Stanley Museum.
