New Carrollton is a suburban community in Prince George’s County, equidistant from the District of Columbia, Baltimore, and Annapolis. Easy access to public transportation makes it a great place to start when exploring the greater D.C. area. The county offers numerous African American Heritage sites: a guide is available through http://www.visitprincegeorges.com/attractions_historic.htm. In nearby College Park, a unique aviation museum affiliated with the Smithsonian offers aircraft, artifacts, and hands-on activities. It is on the grounds of the world's oldest continuously operating airport, founded in 1909 when Wilbur Wright came here to give flight instruction to the first military aviators. In Greenbelt, NASA maintains the Goddard Space Flight Center with interactive exhibits and space-flight artifacts and photographs. It is the hub of all NASA tracking activities and is responsible for the development of unmanned sounding rockets and research in space and earth sciences. Greenbelt Park includes nature trails, picnic facilities and special nature programs. While in the neighborhood, stop by the museum of the planned community of Greenbelt, designed and built by the federal government during the Great Depression. Explore wildlife and the environment through walking and tram tours, and interactive exhibits at the National Wildlife Visitor Center, part of the 12,000-acre Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel, established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. The focus is on global environmental issues, migratory bird studies, habitats, endangered species, and life cycles. Some attractions are strictly for fun, such as Six Flags America in Largo. Prince George’s County is rich in history, with numerous historic homes and farms built by Washington’s elite over the years. One of the best is the beautiful National Colonial Farm, an outdoor living-history museum south of Washington DC, directly across from Mt. Vernon on the Potomac. The farm depicts life for an ordinary tobacco-planting family in Prince George's County in the 1770s.
