Rockville is part of a continuous thread of suburban communities that spread out from Washington, DC, each with a town center and plenty of good restaurants and lodgings. St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville is the burial place of authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. The main road that connects the towns of Rockville and Bethesda — Rockville Pike — is lined with malls serving every price range. Bethesda has nearly 200 restaurants, 20 art galleries and some of the best shopping in the area. On the second Friday evening of every month, a dozen galleries and artist studios open their doors for the Bethesda Art Walk. Lovely McCrillis Gardens are only minutes away from busy downtown Bethesda. History comes alive at the Clara Barton home and Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo. Glen Echo Park dates from 1891, and was a premier amusement park until 1968. Today, the park is being refurbished and offers year-round educational activities presented by craftsmen, plus two amusement-era destinations: the Spanish Ballroom and Dentzel Carousel. Washington DC’s Metro lines — particularly the Red Line — make access between the outlying towns and the many attractions of the capital nearly effortless. Several parks are within easy access of the area, particularly sections of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park that begins south of Rockville.
