Overview

Provincetown, or "P-town," surrounded by beaches and the sand dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore, was the site of the first landing of the Pilgrims and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in 1620. Provincetown, or "P-town," surrounded by beaches and the sand dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore, was the site of the first landing of the Pilgrims and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in 1620. A fishing village founded here in the early 1700s grew to become an important fishing and whaling port, but in the last century, Provincetown has netted its share of well known artists and writers as it developed into an artist colony and summer resort popular first among bohemians and other free thinkers and later among gays and lesbians. It is now famous for the natural wonders of the seashore and the cultural attractions of its lively art and theater scene; above all, it is one of the top destinations for gay tourism in the world. During "Circuit Week" in early July, Provincetown becomes THE destination for followers of the gay resort circuit, and Carnival Week in August features a Mardi-Gras-like parade popular among gays and straights alike. This said, Provincetown is also a popular destination for anyone who enjoys a lively, often cutting-edge arts and cultural scene, good seafood well prepared and miles of dune-backed beaches.
