Overview
Extending 154 miles as the Minnesota-Wisconsin boundary from St. Croix Lake in Wisconsin until it joins the Mississippi, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway offers some of the most diverse water recreation in Minnesota. The rugged semi-wilderness of the river's upper reaches is a favorite with canoeists, while downriver, power boats, narrated cruises, pontoons, gondolas, and kayaks are among the pleasure craft options. The corridor of land along the river includes three state parks with boat rental facilities and launching ramps. The parks' hiking, biking and horseback trails wind through second growth forests of aspen, basswood, birch, maple, and oak, home to a number of endangered species including American peregrine falcons and bald eagles. The area's major trail for bicyclists is the 18-mile Gateway Bike Trail which connects Stillwater with the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Three towns along the river — Taylor Falls, Marine on St. Croix, and Stillwater — are headquarters for boat rentals and narrated scenic boat tours. The largest of the three, Stillwater, is known for its historic buildings and charming specialty shops.
