This lovely little town on the bank of the Mississippi River in the southwest corner of the state was built on an ancient Native American village that was home to the Natchez tribe. The city, the oldest in Mississippi, was founded in 1716 and its main attractions, other than its position high upon a bluff overlooking the river, are the spectacular examples of colonial and antebellum architecture. Each spring and fall during the "pilgrimage" seasons, the many mansions are open to the public for tours. Outdoorsy types can fish, camp or boat in nearby parks, and there are several golf courses to satiate golf junkies. Natchez is also the southern terminus for the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 445-mile two-lane road between Natchez and Nashville, TN. The route commemorates the Native Americans who used this as a trade route between villages. Natchez has several excellent Bed and Breakfasts, elegant boutiques and nice restaurants, making it a great choice for a romantic getaway.
