A visit to Jamesport in the hills of Northwestern Missouri is like taking a step back in time to an era of horse drawn buggies and kerosene lamps. Jamesport is home to Missouri’s largest Amish community, a sect that shuns modern conveniences. The town is known for exceptional Amish made products. The Broadway Pavilion Antique Mall specializes in handmade Amish baskets, quilts and furniture. Downhome Collectibles is known state wide for their handmade Amish dolls and Mosser Glass crafts. The Colonial Rug and Broom Shoppe deals in Ohio-made Amish furniture and hand woven rugs. DeVaul Fine Art carries art by local Amish artisans. Most shops are closed on Thursdays, all are closed on Sundays. Jamesport Harness is worth a stop to see the hundreds of saddles and bridles that are crafted in the shop. Watch horses being shod at Kauffman, Kurtz or Stutzman smithy shops. For something more active there is horseback riding along groomed trails at the Green Acres Riding Stables. In Jamesport you can stroll the streets admiring the stark beauty of the Amish architecture and their trademark covered black buggies. Please do not take pictures of the Amish, however, because it is against their religious beliefs.
