The Sand Harbor area three miles south of Incline Village on State Route 28 is one of the loveliest spots on Lake Tahoe. The outdoor amphitheater overlooking the harbor is a great place for sitting and contemplating the vista beyond as well as the venue for a series of Shakespeare's plays each summer. Cave Rock's most prominent feature is the natural stone arch, a photographers' favorite. Nearby Zephyr Cove Marina is the boarding area for the paddle-wheeler, MS Dixie II and the Tahoe Queen, which take passengers on lunch, sunset and family cruises to various parts of the lake. One of the most interesting cruises goes to Emerald Bay and Vikingsholm — a recreated Norse castle — on the California side of the lake. There are public launches on the Nevada side of the lake as well — a boon to people whose boats travel with them. Two of the most popular hiking trails, the Flume Trail above Sand Harbor and the Tahoe Rim Trail, which encircles the lake, are among the best in the Western U.S. The vegetation throughout Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is lush, making it an area worth visiting again and again.
